Given the relentless nature of Super Bowl preparations, do players ever have the time to take a step back and just enjoy the moment? Niners quarterback Brock Purdy says there is a “fine line” between serious preparations and having fun, but believes it is important to remember what being there means to him. “We are in the Super Bowl. It was the latest chapter of a thrilling season in which Purdy has ascended to become one of the faces of the league. So yes, you understand that and are aware of that, but that stuff you don’t really have time to spend thinking about.

CNN —After his team’s first victory earlier this month, University of Colorado football coach Deion Sanders said something remarkable. He has entered one of the Whitest and most conservative institutions in America — college football — and excelled. It’s no secret the league has had a poor record of hiring Black coaches. After being drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in 1991, Crews spent five years bouncing between six professional teams, including one in Germany. "I would have made more money at McDonald's," Crews, 55, said. It's unclear how much money Crews made in total during his NFL career, which included 32 games for the Rams, San Diego Chargers and Washington Redskins. The Chargers now play in Los Angeles, and Washington D.C.'s team is now called the Commanders. When his ex-teammate stopped lending him money, Crews took a job sweeping factory floors for $8 per hour, he said.

New York CNN —Dan and Tanya Snyder agreed to sell the Washington Commanders franchise to a group led by Josh Harris on Friday, according to a statement from from the team and the investment group. The group also includes NBA legend Magic Johnson as well as Mitchell Rales, the billionaire co-founder of conglomerate Danaher. Harris’ ownership groups include Johnson and billionaire Mitch Rales, Harris’ longtime sports business partner. Snyder first purchased the team, which was then known as the Washington Redskins, for a reported $750 million in 1999. The only franchises from other sports worth more than that $5.6 billion estimated value are the New York Yankees and New York Knicks.

If finalized, the sale would mark the end of the controversial ownership of the Washington franchise by embattled billionaire Daniel Snyder. News of the near deal was first reported by Sportico, which reported the team sold for $6 billion, a record for a North American sports franchise. Snyder purchased the team, then named the Washington Redskins for a reported $750 million in 1999. It adopted the Commanders name last year, after playing two seasons with the name Washington Football Team. “Today marks the end of a long, difficult chapter for all employees and fans of the Washington football organization,” read a statement from Lisa Banks and Debra Katz, two attorneys representing more than 40 former Washington Commanders employees.
This is their third trip to the NFL title game in four years and Kansas City fans can be heard throughout Phoenix singing the "tomahawk chop" chant. It is a jarring contrast to the displays of Native American culture and pride that Super Bowl hosts have invited to participate in the days leading up to the game. Chiefs fans are all but assured to perform the "tomahawk chop" cheer loudly in the minutes before kickoff, as they did prior to the game in their previous two Super Bowl appearances. And it's tone deaf," said Rhonda LeValdo, an Acoma Pueblo journalist who founded the Not in our Honor coalition in 2005, to advocate against the use of Native American imagery in sports. "I don't even understand what you guys are saying and you have the Chiefs logo and you guys are doing the chop."
Asked by a reporter this week what took so long, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was blunt: "There are probably a variety of reasons - probably none of them good." "The reality is, there's such great talent at that position, Black and white," Goodell said at his annual state-of-the-league media briefing. He told the New York Times that year that Black quarterbacks had not "been given the opportunity and the patience" their white counterparts had. "I never felt it was thing where people said it was harder to win with Black quarterbacks, it was more about durability. 'A PROUD MOMENT'At Super Bowl 57, Hurts will be only the eighth Black quarterback to start the title game.

February 2 - Hall of Fame NFL executive Bobby Beathard, an architect of four Super Bowl titles for two different teams, has died at age 86. Beathard was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a contributor in 2018. For Bobby Beathard, it doesn't nearly do the man justice," Chargers owner Dean Spanos said in a statement. "We are saddened by the passing of former Dolphins executive & Hall of Famer, Bobby Beathard," the Dolphins said in a statement. He hired coach Joe Gibbs and drafted Hall of Fame players Art Monk, Russ Grimm and Darrell Green, leading to Super Bowl titles in 1982 and 1987.
A former NFL player has been arrested and charged with kidnapping in Mississippi, police said. Ridgeland police officers found Powe, and accomplice Gavin Bates, 35, at a Chase Bank on Highland Colony Parkway Thursday, police chief Brian Myers told NBC affiliate WLBT of Jackson. Police said a victim contacted police and told officers he was kidnapped “against his will” and was “forced to withdraw money” at the bank, Myers said. The victim is safe, the police chief said, and the matter is under investigation, the station reported. Powe and Bates were both subsequently detained on a kidnapping charge.
